What Does the "No-Fly Time" on a Dive Computer Mean?

The short answer

After you surface, most dive computers display an airplane icon with a countdown — hours ticking toward zero. That is the no-fly time: the computer's estimate of how long its algorithm thinks you should remain at surface pressure before going to altitude. It exists because flying is, in effect, a second ascent.

Why altitude matters after diving

During a dive you absorb extra nitrogen; after you surface, that residual nitrogen leaves your body gradually over hours. Off-gassing at sea-level pressure is the normal, uneventful version of this process.

An airliner cabin, however, is not kept at sea-level pressure. It is pressurized to something like the air pressure found several thousand feet up a mountain — the FAA's Aeronautical Information Manual frames its post-diving guidance around cabin altitudes up to 8,000 feet. Climbing to that lower pressure while still loaded with excess nitrogen steepens the pressure drop your tissues experience, and dissolved gas that would have left quietly can instead come out of solution too quickly. The same logic applies to driving over a high mountain pass after a dive trip — the computer doesn't know whether your altitude comes from a wing or a road.

What the countdown actually is — and isn't

The no-fly timer is an output of your computer's decompression algorithm, based on the theoretical nitrogen load from your recent dives. Three things are worth understanding about it:

  • It's model-specific. Two computers on the same dives can show different no-fly times, because different algorithms and conservatism settings estimate tissue nitrogen differently.
  • It's an estimate, not a measurement. No consumer device measures the nitrogen in your body; the countdown reflects a mathematical model, the same one behind your no-decompression limit.
  • It generally runs longer than your surface interval needs. Being cleared for a repetitive dive and being cleared for a cabin at altitude are different thresholds; the surface interval between dives is a separate, shorter clock.
