The short answer
A surface interval is the amount of time a diver spends at the surface — out of the water or floating on top of it — between one dive and the next. If you finish a dive at 10:00 a.m. and start your next one at 11:30 a.m., your surface interval was one hour and thirty minutes. The clock starts when you surface and stops when you descend again.
That sounds almost too simple to need a name, but the term matters because of what happens to your body during that time.
Why the time between dives matters
While you're underwater breathing compressed gas, your body absorbs extra nitrogen from the air in your tank.
