What Is Surface Decompression?

"Surface decompression" sounds like a contradiction. Decompression stops happen underwater — so how can you decompress at the surface? The answer is a specific working-diver technique that has nothing to do with recreational scuba, but the term shows up often enough in diving references that it's worth understanding what it actually means.

The plain-English definition

Surface decompression is a procedure used in military and commercial diving in which a diver completes part of their required decompression inside a pressurized chamber on the deck of a ship or barge instead of hanging on a line in the water. The diver does an initial portion of decompression in the water, surfaces, moves quickly into the deck chamber, and the chamber is pressurized back down — effectively "returning" the diver to depth — so the remaining decompression can be finished warm and dry.

The controlling reference for these procedures in U.S. government diving is the U.S. Navy Diving Manual, which specifies how such profiles are run. Civilian scientific programs such as the NOAA Diving Program operate under similarly formal procedures for working dives.

Why anyone would do this

Long in-water decompression is miserable and sometimes genuinely impractical for working divers:

  • Cold. A diver who has been working at depth may face a long hang in cold water, and a chamber on deck is warm.
  • Sea state. Holding a precise shallow depth in waves and current is hard; a chamber holds "depth" perfectly.
  • Support. In a chamber, tenders can monitor the diver directly, and the diver can drink water and communicate.

The critical constraint is the transfer: the diver is briefly at surface pressure with decompression still "owed," so the move from water to chamber is done on a strict clock. That's exactly why this is a supervised, equipment-heavy procedure and not something improvised.

What this means for recreational divers: nothing to imitate

Recreational scuba is built so that decompression stops aren't required at all — you stay within no-stop limits and can ascend directly, with a safety stop as a precaution rather than an obligation. If you're clear on that distinction, you can see why surface decompression doesn't exist in recreational diving: there's no deck chamber on a dive boat, no surface-supplied gear, and no procedure for "owing" decompression at the surface. Don't confuse it with two similar-sounding things

  • A surface interval is just the time between recreational dives — normal, planned, and pressure-free.
  • A recompression (hyperbaric) chamber treatment is a medical use of a chamber after a problem has occurred. Organizations like Divers Alert Network maintain plain-language resources on decompression illness and chamber facilities. Surface decompression, by contrast, is a planned part of a working dive, not a response to an emergency.

So when you see "surface decompression" in a Navy table or a commercial-diving context, read it as: finishing planned decompression in a deck chamber under controlled pressure. It's a working-diver logistics tool — interesting to understand, and entirely outside what recreational training covers. For the recreational version of what decompression means, the underlying physics is the same; only the hardware and procedures differ.
