What Is a Multilevel Dive in Scuba?
A multilevel dive is a dive where you spend meaningful time at two or more different depths — typically starting deep and working shallower — instead of staying at roughly one depth for the whole dive. It sounds like trivia, but the distinction changes how much bottom time you get and explains one of the biggest practical differences between tables and computers.
Square profiles vs. multilevel profiles
Dive planning has a name for the simple case: a square profile. You descend to one depth, stay there, and come up. Plotted on a graph of depth against time, it looks like a rectangle — hence the name.
A multilevel profile looks more like a staircase. A typical reef dive works this way naturally: you drop to the deepest point first, spend some time there, then follow the reef up to a middle depth, and finish the dive shallow. Most real recreational dives are multilevel dives whether or not anyone calls them that.
Why the difference matters: tables assume the worst
A recreational dive table can only handle square profiles. When you plan on a table, the entire dive is treated as if you spent every minute at your maximum depth — the most conservative possible assumption. The table-based planning tradition descends from the U.S. Navy Diving Manual, whose procedures are built around depth-and-time entries keyed to the deepest point of the dive.
That assumption is safe but wasteful. If you spent five minutes at 80 feet and forty minutes at 30 feet, a table charges you as if you did forty-five minutes at 80 feet — and your allowed bottom time shrinks accordingly.
Computers were built for multilevel diving
A dive computer recalculates continuously. When you ascend from 80 feet to 30 feet mid-dive, the computer immediately starts crediting you for the shallower depth: nitrogen loads more slowly there, so your remaining no-decompression limit stretches out — you can often watch the NDL number climb on the display as you go shallower. This ability to track a staircase profile in real time, rather than rounding it up to a rectangle, is the main reason computers typically grant far more usable bottom time than tables for the same dive.
Deepest part first
Multilevel logic is why dive briefings almost always plan the deep portion at the start. Working from deep to shallow means you're off-gassing from the deep segment during the shallow segment — the shallow time functions almost like a rolling decompression cushion. Reversing it (shallow first, then deep at the end of the dive) loads your tissues late and leaves less margin for the ascent. Scientific diving programs like the NOAA Diving Program train the same deep-first habit in working divers.
Multilevel is not the same as repetitive
One dive with several depth levels is a multilevel dive. Two separate dives with a surface interval between them make the second one a repetitive dive. The distinction is when you surface: as long as you stay underwater, changing depth just changes the level; once you surface and go back down later, you've started a new dive that carries residual nitrogen from the first.
For most new divers the takeaway is simple: your computer already handles multilevel math for you. Your job is the shape of the dive — deepest point first, then work your way up.
