What Do On-Gassing and Off-Gassing Mean in Scuba Diving?
Divers and instructors throw around two mirror-image terms: on-gassing and off-gassing. They describe the same physical process running in opposite directions, and nearly everything about dive planning — no-decompression limits, surface intervals, slow ascents — exists to manage them.
On-gassing: nitrogen moving in
Air is mostly nitrogen. At the surface, your body is saturated with nitrogen at surface pressure and nothing changes. Underwater, the regulator delivers air at the higher pressure of the surrounding water, and that pressure pushes more nitrogen into solution in your blood and tissues — the same way pressure keeps carbonation dissolved in a sealed soda bottle.
That inbound movement is on-gassing. Two things control how much happens:
- Depth — deeper means higher pressure, so nitrogen dissolves in faster.
- Time — the longer you stay, the more accumulates.
Different tissues absorb at different speeds. Blood and well-perfused organs load quickly; slower tissues take much longer. Decompression models split the body into theoretical compartments with different speeds, which is what your dive computer is simulating when it counts down your no-decompression limit.
Off-gassing: nitrogen moving out
When you ascend, the pressure gradient reverses. Now your tissues hold more nitrogen than the surrounding pressure supports, and the gas begins to leave — carried by the blood to the lungs and exhaled. That's off-gassing.
The critical difference between the two directions: on-gassing is harmless while it's happening; off-gassing has to be paced. If pressure drops slowly, dissolved nitrogen leaves as dissolved gas, no drama. If pressure drops too quickly, nitrogen can come out of solution as bubbles inside the body — the soda bottle opened fast instead of slow. This is the entire reason divers ascend slowly: a slow ascent keeps the pressure gradient gentle enough that off-gassing stays orderly.
Off-gassing doesn't stop at the surface
A point new divers often miss: you keep off-gassing for hours after a dive. Surfacing only means the pressure stopped dropping — your tissues are still unloading the nitrogen they picked up. That leftover load is residual nitrogen, and it's why surface intervals, repetitive-dive rules, and no-fly times all exist. - On-gassing: descend or stay down → nitrogen dissolves in. Controlled by depth and time.
